So many thanks to Minotaur Books for the chance to read this novel!
I happened to receive this book in the mail yesterday, and since I didn’t have anything else in particular to read, I decided to jump right in. What a perfect summer read this ended up being! I absolutely loved the creepy, suspenseful feel while set in a beautiful, secluded location. The grounds of this estate were clearly imagined in my mind as if I were there myself. For the longest time, I wasn’t sure where this story was going, each character seemed incredibly mysterious and full of secrets. I loved how the end of each chapter made me want to read the next.
As the story drew on, I was able to peg the plot twist, but it didn’t make the story any less enjoyable for me. There’s something about a large, eerie house (in this case, two houses) and a mystery that I always seem to eat up! In some ways, this novel had a similar gothic-feel as the Classic, Rebecca, though with a much more modern setting.
All in all, this book was a welcome distraction. I was grateful it was an escape from all current events, while still feeling fresh and new. More authors should definitely take note! I’m grateful amazing fiction can still exist without the pages seeping with activism.
I also appreciated the author’s note at the end of the story. It certainly made the book feel a bit more relatable and provided a personal connection with the author. Anna Downes will certainly be an author I’ll be keeping an eye out for in the future.
