So many thanks to Libro.fm for the chance to listen to this audiobook early!
Set on a remote island off the Irish coast, this is one guest list no one would want to be on, just as no one would have wanted an invitation to the New Year’s Eve party in Foley’s previous novel, The Hunting Party. Lives unravel amid the revelry on an eerie and remote island as family and friends assemble for a glam wedding in an updated Murder on the Orient Express. Each of the principal characters has a reason to want one of their number dead, there are old secrets, and one of them is murdered.
This book was everything I didn’t know I needed! I wasn’t sure I would like this one because I tend to avoid books with a variety of characters and I don’t really like the traditional drama that goes along with weddings. However, I began seeing wonderful reviews from a few readers I trust on Instagram and decided I wanted to give this book a try. Libro.fm made it even easier to decide when they allowed a copy through their advanced listening program.
I couldn’t believe how well done this audio was done, with a mixture of narrators telling the story. Each person had an excellent voice and was pleasant to listen to. The story immediately made me feel as if I was heading to an elusive island myself. The Guest List starts out with a couple of guests heading to the event location on a boat. The choppy waters instantly give the story an eerie feel, as if doom and gloom is likely to happen at any second. As we get to know each character a little better, the story became reminiscent of an intense game of Clue. Anyone could murder the next person at this party, but who will it be? What’s going to happen? Everyone seemed to have despicable traits or a mysterious past.
There were so many questions and such a sense of foreboding, I couldn’t wait to see what would take place! I was surprised by how things turned out in the end and for that reason, I had to give this book five stars. I love it when a thriller keeps me guessing until the end, especially one with such a unique and spooky setting. This certainly makes me excited to check out more of Lucy Foley’s work in the future!
