BLURB:
A couple’s fifteen-year marriage has finally gotten too interesting…
Our love story is simple. I met a gorgeous woman. We fell in love. We had kids. We moved to the suburbs. We told each other our biggest dreams, and our darkest secrets. And then we got bored.
We look like a normal couple. We’re your neighbors, the parents of your kid’s friend, the acquaintances you keep meaning to get dinner with.
We all have secrets to keeping a marriage alive.
Ours just happens to be getting away with murder.
I decided to use my April Libro.fm credit on My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing. It didn’t seem I’d even be able to get my hands on a library copy and this had been on my TBR since it released. I was excited by the enthusiastic reviews of this one and was eager to find out what the fuss was about.
One of the most interesting things about this story was how it started out, with a deaf character trying to pick up a girl in a bar. It sure had a great hook and it definitely pulled me in. I was also intrigued by the married couple at the center of this story. It’s a rarity in thrillers for a married couple, with children no less, to be committing horrific crimes. And the crimes in this story were certainly disturbing. It was the type of book that makes a person look at those in their life differently since the characters can make one feel slightly paranoid. The normal on the outside, demented on the inside thriller trope always seems to make me leery in real life.
This was an incredibly quick listen, but I did find my interest waning in the middle of the book. It seemed there was a lot of repetition, with the same words and phrases being used, without any new developments. It became a little trite and thus resulted in a lower rating than I initially had in mind.
Luckily, things did pick up in the end and actually left me a bit surprised, but it didn’t inspire the shock and awe so many other readers experienced.

But wasn’t it totally crazy at times? I had a great time listening to the audiobook, it was just the right book at the right time. 😀

I did enjoy this one more than you, and it certainly hit all the right craziness for me. I am glad at least it did pick up for you at the end.

I’m so glad it ticked all your boxes. It could have been my mood or the audio…I’m not sure!

Great review! I also found my interest dipped towards the middle of the book and wasn’t nearly as shocked as many other readers.

I’m glad to know it wasn’t just me who felt that way.
