From Carpinteria, California, we left.
In Arizona, we barely spoke.
In New Mexico, I gave him a promise that I knew I couldn’t keep.
In Texas, we slept under the stars.
In Oklahoma, he told me a story I wouldn’t soon forget.
In Louisiana, he gave my soul a voice.
Between Arkansas and Mississippi, we took full advantage of an opportunity.
In Tennessee, I studied his face.
In Kentucky, he introduced me to his parents.
In Ohio, he found my heart.
In West Virginia, we drank whiskey and told ourselves that truths are better left untold.
In Maryland, we felt the weight of the night.
In Pennsylvania, his wife called.
And in New York, I asked myself one question:
Would he be able to let me go when it was time?
Wow. This book was beautiful.
I don’t know how she does it, but J. Lynn Bailey continues to crank out books better than the last. Her writing speaks to the deepest parts of my heart and her stories continue to captivate me days (weeks/months) after finishing them. The Light We See has easily become my favorite of J. Lynn’s to date! I have such an abundance of highlights, I could hardly pick the quotes I wanted to share for this review.
“Joy is the feeling we get when we set our burdens free.”
I always love a good road trip story and this one was absolutely perfect, describing areas I’ve visited on my own road trips over the years. I firmly believe nothing allows people to get to know each other quicker than hours in the car (or time playing board games – but this is neither here nor there), and J. Lynn was able to display this dynamic exquisitely. Catherine and Luke’s relationship gave me all the feels on this cross-country drive. I was apprehensive, excited, happy, and heartbroken along the way. I wasn’t anxious about predicting about what would happen in this story, as I usually am with the books I read, I only felt like I was along for the ride (pun intended) with these two.
“Because we love, we grieve. Whether it was a good relationship, a complicated one, or just plain ugly. It’s still the end. And we’ve got to do something about all those feelings.”
I was won over by these beautifully broken characters who completely jumped off the pages as if they were real people. It’s quite clear Luke Perry was the inspiration for Luke in this story and I can’t help but be struck by the emotion of the tribute this novel pays to him as a person many women grew up loving. Knowing he inspired J. Lynn made the story even more realistic for me, in turn, making me love it all the more. There were countless twists I didn’t see coming in The Light We See, each one surprised me more than the last. I couldn’t believe how invested and unprepared I was for this book, in the best possible way.
“I know it will take my heart time to heal with past traumas, past hurts, and it might not ever heal completely, but I have faith that I’m right where I’m supposed to be — finally.”
If you’re in need of a beautiful love story that will tug on your heartstrings, look no further. And if you’ve yet to read J. Lynn Bailey, what on earth are you waiting for? Grab this book immediately…along with a box of tissues.
