I’ll Be Gone in the Dark is not my normal read, but after witnessing the shock and awe on Instagram, I decided I wanted to listen to this audiobook immediately. I went into this novel completely blind. I didn’t have any prior knowledge about The Golden State Killer, so I was listening to this book in a way that felt almost like Fiction. However, real life always happens to be more unbelievable than Fiction could ever hope to be.

The introduction by Gillian Flynn immediately hooked me (she has a great voice for narration, by the way). Knowing the passion Michelle had for finding this killer, how it became her life’s work, instantly made me feel a sense of kinship with her. Though true crime isn’t my area of expertise, but I greatly appreciate witnessing a person’s passion for a subject seep through. It’s contagious and makes me eager to understand what inspires their desire. As I made it through this book, that was the main thing that stood out to me in the writing. Michelle lived and breathed this case and the fact that she was unable to see its closing in her lifetime absolutely broke me. What an injustice!

I was entirely baffled listening to this story. How could someone possibly get away with the rapes and murders of as many victims in the large span of time as this man was able to? There were distinct patterns, physical descriptions, and even DNA of the killer on hand, yet he escaped the clutches of the law for most of his life. It’s unfathomable.

I highly recommend listening to this audiobook. If you’re a little sensitive to gore, be forewarned this could be uncomfortable. I had trouble sleeping at night while I was in the thick of this novel and had wild dreams when I was able to sleep. It’s a pretty powerful story.
