Behind Her Eyes – Audiobook Review

28965131Ok, I get it. I get the hype.

Behind Her Eyes by Sarah Pinborough has been on my TBR for the longest time, so I decided to give the audiobook a try to finally get this book into my brain! I love listening to audiobooks while I cook, do laundry, or run. Thrillers, Nonfiction, or Fantasy novels are usually easiest for me to listen to and this one happened to work super well. The narration was great, both readers had beautiful British accents and were able to add a mesmerizing Scottish accent for a particular character as needed. Once I started listening, I couldn’t stop – meaning my family got a few nice meals and fresh, folded laundry. 😉

Louise is a single mom, a secretary, stuck in a modern-day rut. On a rare night out, she meets a man in a bar and sparks fly. Though he leaves after they kiss, she’s thrilled she finally connected with someone.

When Louise arrives at work on Monday, she meets her new boss, David. The man from the bar. The very married man from the bar…who says the kiss was a terrible mistake but who still can’t keep his eyes off Louise.

And then Louise bumps into Adele, who’s new to town and in need of a friend, but she also just happens to be married to David. David and Adele look like the picture-perfect husband and wife, but then why is David so controlling, and why is Adele so scared of him?

As Louise is drawn into David and Adele’s orbit, she uncovers more puzzling questions than answers. The only thing that is crystal clear is that something in this marriage is very, very wrong, but Louise can’t guess how wrong―and how far a person might go to protect their marriage’s secrets.

I’m familiar with Sarah Pinborough’s lesser-known novella, The Language of Dying, and absolutely loved her writing style, though these two books could not be on further ends of the spectrum genre-wise. I knew Behind Her Eyeshad several interesting reviews, to put it lightly, and I was eager to find out what my own reaction would be. I rarely, if ever, give Thrillers or suspense novels 5-stars. There are plenty I enjoy, some I would even read again, but there is almost always something missing for me – usually a shock factor I deeply desire. I want my jaw on the floor when I finish the book. Often, I think my expectations are too high or maybe I’m too good at predicting the outcomes of novels in these genres. Then a book like Behind Her Eyes comes along and I realize what it takes for me to give those full five stars.

Really, this book is all about the ending, but the meat of the story is ridiculously entertaining too. I love how the author fed readers small hints throughout without giving the whole mystery of the plot away. There were always questions and I was constantly thinking about what could happen next. The build-up to the climax of this story was addicting, just when it would seem things were solved, something new and exciting would happen. There was never a dull moment for me.

There’s a small Sci-Fi element within this story, which could throw some readers for a loop, but it completely worked for me. I don’t mind things going a little off kilter or out of genre because it makes a story original. There is only one book I could vaguely compare this one to, a book called Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger (the author of The Time Travelers’ Wife). As Behind Her Eyes concludes, you may need to find comfort in a fellow reader of this novel to commiserate with, but guys, I think this one is worth the hype! I loved it!
