Dark Matter – Review

27833670How far would you be willing to go to keep the life you have?  How many different roads would you take to find the road home?

Jason is faced with these questions when he is abruptly snatched from his quaint life with his lovely wife, Daniela, and son, Charlie.  After a moment of being filled with his love for his life and family, though slightly wondering “what could have been” if he had followed a different path with his career, he is left wishing he would have fully appreciated the moments he had been given.  Dark Matter is full of thrills, mystery, suspense, life lessons, and even a bit of romance.

I’ll admit, when I first heard this book was classified as Science Fiction after already adding it to my TBR list, I was a little apprehensive.  Certain types of Science Fiction can be interesting, but I’m generally not interested in the genre.  However, when the book became available through Overdrive, I decided to give it a chance.  I am thrilled I put my apprehension to the side because this was a thoroughly enjoyable read. Without giving too much away, the plot of the story centers around alternate realities. While there is a scientific aspect to the subject matter, it is minor and doesn’t bog down the story.  I found this to be intriguing to read about, and fun to put myself in the shoes of Jason, while simultaneously being glad scientists have yet to discover such a phenomenon.  I can’t imagine what a disaster our world would be if humans had access to the “box” in this novel.  If you’re intrigued, you need to pick up this book immediately!  It was unlike anything I’ve ever read before. I’m hoping since this book has become such a hit, Hollywood will make a movie of it before too long. I know it would be something my husband would enjoy watching with me.  It had a slightly similar feel to the movie, Unknown, with Liam Neeson.

Blake Crouch’s writing was exceptional I never felt as if the scientific aspects were over my head.  The characters seem like legitimate humans, making their emotions fully relatable.  I would encourage everyone to read this book, even if it’s out of your comfort zone.  There is something for everyone within the pages of this novel.
